A Request for Help

A little more than a month ago we added to our household with the birth of our second child. I also find myself the sole earner in our household. These are both things we knew would happen going into the pregnancy.

What I didn't plan on was that the money (earned from freelance work) that I earmarked for the publishing debt that was accrued prior to partnering with Night Shade Books would need to go into my family's coffers instead of towards the debt.

I feel very awkward to ask for help when there are so many people who also need help. It's not easy for me to put this out there for the world.

So here's what I'm thinking. I have some back stock on issues of the Hugo and World Fantasy award nominated magazine Electric Velocipede, as well as copies of the three chapbooks I published. You can see more details about the issues and the chapbooks on the main catalog page of the website.

In addition to the regular items, I'm running a special for the chapbooks here. Check them out, and if anything sounds interesting to you, making a purchase will help keep the hounds at bay.

I may come up with something else in the coming weeks and I'll certainly post it here.

UPDATE: The sale is going very well. Copies of back issues are dwindling, but we still have plenty of copies of the chapbook. Also, there is a new special deal with the Robert Freeman Wexler chapbook, be sure to go to the sales page and look at special offer #2. More details here.

Have you thought of using something like PayPal for donations?

Hey John — I look forward to reading the chapbooks. Good luck -- any friend of Ashton Kutcher's is a friend of mine!

I second having a PayPal donate button and perhaps listing how much are you short by. Having a visible goal sometimes helps the donating spirit. :(

I'm so sorry to hear that; EV is such a wonderful zine. I have donated and will spread the word. Good luck!

The blog here has a PayPal button, over in the sidebar. I don't know if the EV website itself does.

Does buying an ad in EV count toward helping your finances? (serious question)

I do want to say, please subscribe and please consider taking out an ad in Electric Velocipede, but that will not directly impact my finances.

What it does impact is Electric Velocipede going forward. The more subscribers we have, the support from advertising, that keeps us making issues into the future.

We've got a bunch of slam-bang issues coming out this year, and we're looking forward to making many more in years to come.
