World Fantasy Awards 2008

UPDATED

Hey folks, I was going over my nomination ballot for the World Fantasy Awards. The ballot must be postmarked by June 30, 2008 so I have plenty of time, but I wanted to get started thinking about it.

However, there was something I was wondering about. Perhaps it's a bit unfair to post it here so publicly, but these are nominations, not votes. I was trying to think of people for the Special Award - Non-Professional. I thought I should nominate Neil Clarke (publisher), Nick Mamatas (editor), and Sean Wallace (editor) for Clarkesworld Magazine.

I'm fairly that would be the right category for them as neither of them earns a living from the magazine. So, at least in my head, that's the distinction between Professional and Non-Professional. But I wonder, since they clearly pay professional rates, maybe they should go under Professional.

But, looking over who's won for that category over the years, it seems at this point they should get nominated under the Non-Professional category.

What do you think?

Thanks for thinking of us.

Non-pro sounds right for me.

The way it was explained to me (by a former judge) is that the Professional category is for professionals who make their entire living (or near as makes no difference) from a single job, and the Non-Professional category is for professionals who do not work full time in the area for which they are being nominated. I have no idea whether this is true, and the WF Board seem unwilling to clarify the issue.

My impression -- which includes my own tenure as a judge -- is similar to Cheryl's, though the administrators seem to reserve the right to make any final determinations themselves in specific cases.

The big watershed does seem to be "day-job or not day-job."

Andy, would the judges correct incorrect nominations? Say, a whole bunch of people nominate someone for the Professional category, but they should be in the Non-professional category, would they be SOL?

BTW, I kind of like that I'm "non-professional" it's like they know me!

I will be nominating Neil, Nick, and Sean for Non-professional then.
