UPDATE: Holy crud Batman! I TOTALLY forgot Talebones! Sorry Patrick!
In light of all the talk online of supporting short fiction markets, I thought I would list the places I subscribe to that are short-fiction publications:
- The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction
- Realms of Fantasy
- Fantasy Magazine
- Weird Tales
- Talebones
- Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet
- Shimmer Magazine
- Farthing
- Flytrap
- Full Unit HookUp
- Strange Horizons (comes out WEEKLY!)
- Clarkesworld Magazines
- Farrago's Wainscot
- Heliotrope Magazines
- Ideomancer
- Mytholog
- ElectricSpec
I did have a subscription to Asimov's and I've often thought about re-subscribing, but haven't. I never subscribed to Analog, although I did work there. I think Stanley Schmidt does a great job selecting fiction for Analog, it's just not what I look for in short stories.
I did subscribe to Trunk Stories and Grendelsong, but those magazines are currently not publishing. Also, I used to buy/receive copies of Artemis, Century, and CRANK!, but none of those magazines are with us any more.
BTW, Ian Randall Strock, who was the editor of Artemis, is currently doing a fantastic job with SF Scope, an all-around news source for speculative fiction (i.e., science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc.). If you haven't checked out SF Scope, you're doing yourself a disservice.
At one time I used to get all of the DNA publications--Absolute Magnitude, Dreams of Decadance, Fantastic, Chronicle, and Pirate Writings--in the mail, but I haven't seen any issues from them in more than five years.

FUHU is closed to further submissions-- are they still publishing?
I don't know. Mark (the editor) and I swap subscriptions for each other's publication. I haven't heard anything from him about it.
I really think he's just trying to catch up on his backlog. This is why I instituted the reading periods; being open every other three months keeps me ahead (sort of) of my submissions.

We plan to offer subscriptions to Sybil's Garage very shortly. I'm currently revamping the store section of our site in preparation for the PAPER CITIES anthology, so when that is finished we'll be offering subscriptions.
Hope he's still publishing... just got a benefactor subscription, that might help a bit more than wearing the shirt.
Pirate Writings became Fantastic... and Fantastic sort of vanished into the ether. Ed McFadden took the magazine with him when he ultimately severed ties with DNA, I believe, and the magazine is sort of dead. I think. Or sleeping. Reports are conflicting.
The last anyone saw of Absolute Magnitude or Dreams of Decadence was when Warren put some of the stories in several issues of Chronicle, and of course Chronicle itself hasn't been seen more than once this year, if that.
And so ends the strange tale of the DNA fiction magazines. Long live Weird Tales and Mythic Delirium, which survived by running for their lives. :>
Thanks for the nice words, John.
Yes, Chronicle is deceased. It's last issue was (I'm pretty sure) September 2006. If you were reading Chronicle for the news (which I was editing), I've moved all those efforts over to SFScope, as John said. This way, my lead time is measure in hours, rather than two months, and you get the content for free, rather than paying (though if you're feeling generous enough to click an ad now and then, we can actually get paid a little money to try to defray the costs).
Glad to hear you're reading! Thanks for the mention.

Got another magazine for you:
Consider checking out Every Day Fiction on September 1st, when we publish our first story.
It's a new concept in zines. We publish one flash fiction story every day, of all different genres. We use blogging software to categorize our stories so if you click on, say, "Science Fiction", EDF becomes a sci-fi mag. We have 500 daily subscribers so far and we're growing quickly.
We're free, so please check us out on September 1st!
