So, what have I been up to lately? It seems like this Fall is a flurry of activity fot lots of people (too lazy to link) as I've read a number of posts that start like this one.
Well, in addition to working at a bookstore, and a library, and going to library school, I've been laying out Fantasy Magazine, a new newsstand periodical edited by Sean Wallace of Prime Books fame. This issue debuts at World Fantasy this year, and everyone who's a member of the convention will get a copy, gratis, because that's the swell type of bloke that Sean is.
The magazine is very interesting, featuring new work from people like Jeffrey Ford, Richard Parks, Sonya Taaffe, Nick Mamatas, and many more. There's an excerpt from Jeff VanderMeer's upcoming novel, Shriek: An Afterword (an excellent read), an interview with Jeffrey Ford, and book reviews. I tried to do some interesting things with the design, since Electric Velocipede is pretty vanilla as far as design goes.
Nonetheless, I was up until 2AM getting the thing sent to Sean (took about a half hour to send it, and I had to do it twice because of a mistake I made!), but I'm happy with it. I'm excited to see it in print in a few weeks. If you're going to World Fantasy, we can look at it together. If you're not, you can go to www.fantasy-magazine.com and subscribe. I may see about a few extra copies for myself since I was involved in creating the thing.
It's nice to have done for a lot of reasons. Now I can focus on school. This issue, being the premiere, has a lot of unknowns while you do something for the first time. It's about 30 pages longer than the typical issue will be, so that was more work. Future issues should be mush easier, smoother, to put together.
In other news, I've been working every day since October 3, and my first day off with be this Friday, October 21. I'm wiped out. But it only lasts until December...right?

I've been through times like that. For reasons sundry and complicated, I took my college's whole english lit core curriculum in one year while holding down a full time job. That was fun. Something like three english classes at a time. I really don't remember much from those days.
Ah, and there was the time I was working the day job, then pulling evening shifts at borders six nights a week. Yes, truly, that was a glorious thing.
Hang in there, Rev. Klima. I'm looking forward to seeing Fantasy Magazine. Hell, I'm looking forward to finally meeting you, too.
